Basic Dog Training – What’s Involved

Your dog isn’t just a pet, he’s part of the family. And just like you teach your kids to be productive and socially acceptable you have to teach your dog to be productive and socially acceptable too. An obedient, socially acceptable dog is a joy to you and everyone else too. But like children, a dog needs training to develop social skills and to become obedient.

You must have patience as you train your dog, for they like to be a bit rambunctious and obedience doesn’t come easily. Be firm but never hurtful as you teach what is needed. Violence will only make your dog more anxious and thus more aggressive.

You’re going to have to persevere, because your dog can’t learn something having done it just once. It will have to be practiced over and over again just as some human habits need a lot of practice.

Repeat all instructions over and over. The learning process can take some time. But once the behavior or trick is learned he will not require as much instructions, often a motion with your hand will be enough. Once he is trained you will notice a good change in temperament and behavior. A well trained dog is impressive in public and a joy at home.

No one is bothered by a well behaved dog. They don’t mind him coming into their store when they realize he obeys his master and won’t create problems or make any sort of mess.

When training the dog, you need to make sure he knows who is boss. Dogs have a tendency to try to take charge. They need a boss and if the owner doesn’t take the initiative they will try to assume the dominant position. So it’s very important that you establish yourself as the boss from the beginning. Teaching the dog will strengthen your relationship, though, and you will grow together.

If you wish to take your dog to a school, there are a number of good ones. Training the dog can save his life or yours in a tragic situation. When a dog has been trained and knows what to do, he can save a situation. The training is very help because they have learned to listen to you and will respond to your commands. They will understand what to do.

Dogs, like people, are all very different and learn at a variety of speeds. It is important you realize your dogs learning capability and speed. If you intend to train him yourself you need to take his temperament and feelings into the equation. Knowing his temperament and what reaction he has to different things can be very important.
